All your questions answered.
Who is Rolfing for?
Rolfing is for everybody!
What does Rolfing treat?
Rolfing is for people who want to
Its also for people wanting to
I've heard Rolfing is painful, will your sessions hurt?
No, I am a gentle Rolfer. You do not need to feel pain to feel better. By working with the brain's 'movement map' we can find freedom in the tissue without the need for brute force. I will always try to create a safe and nurturing space for you to heal.
I've heard Rolfing is a treatment for trauma, is that true?
Rolfing may be useful in conjunction with treatment from your mental health professional, but it is not a mental health modality. Bessel van de Kolk MD, clinician and researcher, has conducted research in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He recognises that the body is a significant and often ignored component in the treatment of trauma. He asserts that physical practices like Rolfing and Yoga that slowly and mindfully engage with feeling and sensing the body can be a component of the treatment for trauma however it is not a mental health modality. If you have any concern about your mental health then please contact your GP or mental health professional. For acute support try Lifeline 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies. Traditionally Rolfing was delivered in a series of 10 sessions. I don't always follow this series (but always follow the underlying principles). I prefer to tailor treatment for each persons unique needs, which means that the number of sessions depends on the situation. Simpler aches and pains may need 1-5 sessions. More complex situations could take 10-20 sessions
Do I have to commit to 10 sessions?
No. You can come for as few or as many sessions as you like.
How far apart are the sessions spaced?
Sessions are normally spaced 1 week to 1 month apart (but can be more or less).
What happens in a Rolfing session?
We begin with a conversation where tell me about your history and what you are hoping to gain from the session. Depending on your needs I may ask to see your posture in standing or walking. Next the bodywork treatment will occur with you lying on the treatment table. I offer precise and gentle touch and movement cues to help your tissues move well again. At the end of the session you may sit, stand or walk and notice how you feel. I may offer you a practice to do at home.
What do I wear?
Please wear comfy clothes like those you would wear to yoga (no jeans or skirts).
